  1. The ntp Directory
  2.  
  3. This directory and its subdirectories contain the various distributions
  4. of the Network Time Protocol (NTP), together with related auxilliary
  5. programs, documentation and strange stuff. You are welcome to the lot,
  6. with due consideration of the COPYRIGHT files stashed in the
  7. distributions. You are also invited to contribute bugfixes and drivers
  8. for new and exotic radios, telephones and sundials.

  10. The base directory ~ntp/pub/ntp contains the distributions and related
  11. stuff, including:

  13. msctime.tar.Z   compressed tar archive containing the NBS Automated
  14.                 Comuter Time Service software, ported to Microsoft C for
  15.                 IBM PC and Unix C for Sun workstations
  16.  
  17. nbstime.tar.Z   compressed tar archive containing the NBS Automated
  18.                 Comuter Time Service software, as distributed by NBS
  19.  
  20. ntp.3.4         subdirectory containing the NTP Version 1 daemon for    
  21.                 Unix written by Michael Petry and Louis Mamakos of the
  22.                 University of Maryland. Not recommended for new
  23.                 installations.

  25. xntp            subdirectory containing the NTP Version 2 daemon for
  26.                 Unix written by Dennis Fergusson of the University of
  27.                 Toronto. Not recoommended for new installations.

  29. xntp3.tar.Z     compressed tar archive containing the NTP Version 3
  30.                 daemon for Unix adapted from the version-3 daemon by
  31.                 Lars Mathiesen of the University of Copenhagen and many
  32.                 of his friends. Restricted for use in the US and Canada.

  34. xntp3.export.tar.Z compressed tar archive containing the NTP Version 3
  35.                 daemon for Unix adapted from the version-3 daemon by
  36.                 Lars Mathiesen of the University of Copenhagen and many
  37.                 of his friends. Unrestricted distribution. Requires a
  38.                 software implementation of the Data Encryption Standard
  39.                 readily available outside the U.S. and Canada.

  41. loran.tar.Z     compressed tar archive containing the schematics,
  42.                 artwork and documentation for a computer-controlled
  43.                 LORAN-C timing receiver used as a precision source of
  44.                 standard time. Not recommended for beginners.
  45.  
  46. gadget.tar.Z    compressed tar archive containing the schematics,
  47.                 artwork and related information for (a) a modem for the
  48.                 Canadian time/frequency radio service CHU, which can be
  49.                 used as a primary reference clock for NTP Version 2 and
  50.                 Version 3 daemons, and (b) a pulse shaper and line
  51.                 driver used to provide an external one-pulse-per-second
  52.                 signal from a radio clock to a serial port.

  54. minimuf.c, gain.dat program in C and data file in ascii for a program
  55.                 that computes high frequency radio propagation data and
  56.                 delays between two geographic locations on the Earth.
  57.                 This is intended for use in setting propagation-delay
  58.                 switches on radio clocks.

  60. jaguar.txt.Z    Job description for a Maya high priest taken from the
  61.                 Book of Chillum Balum. Useful for after-dinner rallies
  62.                 and cheerleaders.

  64. info.txt.Z      compressed file containing useful hints and kinks on
  65.                 setting up NTP service

  67. The doc subdirectory includes a number of compressed files containing
  68. papers, rfcs and technical reports on NTP. Those with names ending in
  69. *.ps.Z are in PostScript, while the others are in ascii. When the same
  70. document is displayed with *.ps.Z and *.txt.Z extension, the latter
  71. version is an ascii-greppable file that may not violate the Principle of
  72. Least Astonishment with respect to the former version; however, much is
  73. lost in translation.
